About

Twenty-five years of turning direction into something that gets done.

Mark Lucas is a strategic advisor and certified Project Management Professional based in Cochrane, Alberta.

The work

A planner who has had to deliver the plan.

Mark spent 25 to 30 years managing projects for the public sector in British Columbia and Manitoba before bringing that work to small and mid-sized businesses and local organizations. Different rooms, very different budgets, and the same recurring problem: the thinking was fine, the follow-through was not.

That observation is why EAGL Management exists. After a long run of successful projects, what stood out was not that organizations lacked ambition or ability. It was that most of them lacked direction expressed as a clear roadmap and plan, and so good people spent years working hard on the wrong order of things.

He works collaboratively rather than prescriptively. Clients are the essential input to their own plan, because the people doing the work already know most of what is broken. The job of an outside advisor is to get that out of the room, sort the important from the merely urgent, and turn it into something sequenced and owned.

He is candid, which is usually what a leadership team or a board actually needs. A consultant who agrees with everything is pleasant company and poor value. If a priority is not realistic given the capacity in the room, Mark will say so while there is still time to do something about it.

The certification matters here. As a Project Management Professional, Mark writes plans knowing exactly what it takes to deliver them, and he can stay on to run the delivery. That is a rarer combination than it should be. Strategy people hand over a document. Project people are handed someone else's plan. Mark does both ends.

A good deal of that career has been project rescue: being called in partway through, when something important has stalled and someone has to get it finished. He is usually asked to stay on and see it through to completion, which tells you most of what you need to know.

How Mark works

Four things you can expect.

Fewer priorities, properly owned

A plan with fourteen strategic priorities is a wish list. The hard, valuable work is getting a leadership team to agree on the three or four that matter most this year, and to name who owns each one.

Written in your language

No consulting vocabulary, no frameworks for the sake of frameworks. If a director or a supervisor cannot read a page of the plan and know what to do next, the plan has failed regardless of how good the thinking was.

Honest about capacity

Most plans fail on arithmetic, not ambition. They assume time nobody has. A roadmap built against real capacity is less exciting to present and far more likely to be finished.

Reviewed, not filed

Goals need continuous review, not one session a year. A regular review catches drift while it is still cheap to correct, and it keeps the plan part of how the organization actually runs.

The name and the mark

EAGL is not a word. It is four people.

The four letters are his family's initials. Mark, his wife, and their two children. The business is named after the people it was built for.

That is not a branding exercise, and it explains more about how this firm operates than a capability statement would. A company named after your own family is not one you can hide behind. There is no account manager to pass you along to and no junior team to absorb the blame. The person sitting in your board room is the person whose name is on the door.

The mark makes the same point a different way: two rings with a line driven clean through them. Not stopping at the edge, not curving around, not almost reaching. Pick the objective, then carry through it. Everything else on this site, from the way a plan gets written to the way progress gets reviewed, is in service of that one idea.
